Last week, the government of France declared a curfew that has been extended all over the country. And the curfew will come into effect from Friday night. And over 69% of the total population, that is, 46 million people, will be impacted by the new measures.
In the latest curfew, over 54 total residential areas are involved (38 new cities are added to the list), and as France is sensing the chance of spreading COVID-19, the government declared a strict curfew from 9 PM to 6 AM.
The box office and cinema theatres will be affected by the curfew. However, next week, the upcoming Cannes Film Festival has to rescheduled its timetable and screening slot.
In an interview with Deadline, a festival rep shares that the organization has rescheduled the screening and will be pushed to 6 PM. The screening time was initially slated for 7 PM from 27 to 29 October. And some films will also be screened during day time.
Cannes Film Festival was initially planned to take place from 12 to 23 May this year. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the management canceled the festival and announced that they would be looking for other means to explore it. On 3 June, the organization selected the final films for screening. In an interview, the Cannes Film Festival director, Thierry Fremaux, said they were hoping to have Spike Lee as the President of the Jury for the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. In September 2020, The organizers announced the festival would be held on 27-29 October on the Croisette and screened a few short films and four officially selected films. Last year, Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite won the Palme d’Or award.
The Prime Minister of France, Jean Castex, declared this evening that the curfew is extended for at least six weeks. The sudden curfew will affect the box office collections and the upcoming release. However, the government announced to provide a relief fund of 30 million euros to help the film industry.
Cultural Minister Roselyne Bachelot shared that their objective is to ensure that the film theatres in the country do not close, and to achieve that, film releases must be maintained. She also added that in this tough time, the world needs culture now more than ever.
However, it is good news that the Cannes Film Festival is still happening after so many delays. We hope that the selected movies will leave an impactful impression.
